Matthijs Nelemans

Matthijs Nelemans founded Neemley (formerly Finnel) in 2015 with the idea that complex enforcement cases ask for more than only legal expertise. As he is trained in both law and economics, he views matters where appropriate from two angles: a legal analysis and the economic background. In combination with his expertise in the field of emerging technologies, this has led to criminal cases being settled, administrative-law proceedings won and civil disputes resolved, on the basis of arguments that others had not seen.

As professor of Financial Law Enforcement at Tilburg Law School, Matthijs helps give shape to the thinking of the next generation about regulation and enforcement. He teaches a course on financial-economic criminal law and a course on artificial intelligence and the criminal justice system. His academic work and legal practice come from the same driving force, that is the conviction that better understanding leads to better outcomes, whether it be in court, academia or boardroom.

Before founding Neemley, Matthijs practised law at De Brauw Blackstone Westbroek in Amsterdam. He has been a visiting researcher at Harvard Law School and Columbia Law School.

He appears in administrative-law, criminal-law and civil proceedings. In addition, he advises companies and boards that are the subject of investigation by authorities, carries out internal investigations and appears as an expert witness. He is engaged directly by clients, but also by law firms and government agencies, both in the Netherlands and abroad.
